THE BUSINESS OF FIGHTING IN THE UFC

Cub Swanson has been one of the top MMA fighters for years, and few people know the business of fighting in the UFC better than him. Speaking to the Escape Your Limits podcast, he explains how the Octagon draws many parallels with entrepreneurship away from the cage, too. It’s all about the details, including how to recover if you lose.

“People don’t understand that fighting – especially if you’re methodical – makes you have a diverse game and you can adjust, but you can also make a lot of miscalculations,” Cub explains.

“Sometimes it’s better just to be the brute fighter that just goes in there and fights, but he’s easier to game plan against sometimes. People don’t realise how intricate it is or how a game plan can throw you off or get you the win.

    THE REAL FIGHT GAME…

“As fighters we call it human chess. We’re in there making decisions in the midst of it. In a second, if I take a kick I could lose my arm if it breaks. Then I’m using what I have left. I’m calculating what are my best moves in this situation against this style. How do I continue to fight through this? I’m not going to quit because that’s not who I am. It’s a very serious human chess match.”

There are metaphors aplenty between business and the fight game, and a lot of it comes down to competition and the competitive nature of those involved. Cub continues to delve into the details of fighting in the UFC and competing out of it.

FIGHTING IN THE UFC OR BATTLES IN BUSINESS?

“Business is definitely a fight. There are a lot of similarities. I did learn very quickly about business. If you can be taken advantage of, then people will. They’re looking to put themselves in the best situation and they want to be successful. People don’t care if they step on you to get it.

“That’s not the way I want to be. I wanted to make sure that I filtered through the people that I really like being around so that we’re both successful and happy with the way things went down.

“For me, that’s been something I really focus on and put a lot of thought into. I don’t want to not like the guy I’m doing business with. If I can try to be around good people then that’s what I’m going to try and do.”

    LOSING MONEY AND BREAKING BONES.

“To me, if I lose and I’m losing my product then maybe I break a bone. In business, the fear of losing my money or someone else’s money… That’s pretty painful. If I lost someone else’s money because of a mistake, that’s difficult. I’m not someone that ones to tell someone I messed up and lost money.

“That’s something I’m going to have to get past. Luckily I haven’t had a crash and burn like that.”
