How Best's Bootcamp and Escape created London's latest boutique fitness destination

The rise of the boutique gym has given gym owners the freedom to get creative. These new independent operators have no limits to what they can do and are developing truly innovative exercise experiences. That’s great news for customers, giving them lots of options when looking for training that fits their requirements.

In the heart of London, one of the new players to hit the scene earlier this year was Best’s Bootcamp. They had a great vision for what they would deliver to customers, and Escape Fitness worked with them to develop their ideas and achieve everything they wanted to achieve.

Making their mark on the boutique fitness scene

London’s boutique scene is flourishing. Following in the footsteps of big-name boutiques like Barry’s Bootcamp and 1Rebel comes the newest player in the city’s luxury fitness scene, Best’s Bootcamp in Charing Cross.

Best’s brings a fresh, new feel to the boutique scene. With a 360-degree Instructor Cam, full studio lighting and a resident DJ mixing new music every day, Best’s Bootcamp really ups the ante.

But of course, it isn’t just the aesthetics that draw the crowds. Boutique providers like 1Rebel, Barry’s and now Best’s have a strong sense of community; their users enjoy training together in an environment that is more conducive to achieving the fitness experience they want.

Turning conceptual ideas into achievable designs

Best’s Bootcamp Managing Director, Lee Drabble, worked closely with the Escape Product design and installation teams to ensure that, from concept to execution, they achieved the premium look and feel he wanted.

The job for the Escape team wasn’t simply translating Best’s ideas into design concepts. First they had to get to grips with Best’s approach to fitness. With an emphasis on whole body training, Best’s pushes people through all three planes of motion. It’s a great blueprint for effective functional training sessions that targets individuals’ specific personal training goals. It is, above all, a client-focussed experience.

A stylish vision of the future

There are always pragmatic considerations involved with any project like this. Space is often a factor. The Best’s team looked to Escape to deliver a stylish aesthetic that made the most of their available space. They knew that efficiency was key, and they knew that Escape Fitness could help them design and create a spectacular training environment that combined form with function.

Space-saving storage solutions were needed to free-up enough personal space and store all the training equipment. Best’s wanted its users to be able to reach out and grab any piece of equipment, for any class, from any floor space.

To fit in with the sleek design aesthetic of the studio, and to provide the necessary space savings, Escape installed Cross Hub racking flush to the walls. This ensures efficient storage throughout the whole studio space, giving Best’s the capacity needed for functional training equipment without making the training room feel small or cramped.

The Cross Hub station sends out the right kind of message to users too. Purpose-built for heavy free weight zones, it helps show that Best’s take their functional training zone very seriously.

To kit the studio out, Best’s selected a range of Escape Kettlebells, Medicine Balls, Octagon Dumbbells and Power Tubes, adding real variety to their functional training offering.

Bespoke design solutions for boutique clubs

The studio’s headline feature is the Best’s Box – a safe, progressional soft step for plyometric work on an incline and a decline. Escape took Scott Best and Lee Drabble’s initial ideas and came up with the design. It’s a customised variation on Escape’s own Plyosoft Box and gives studio users the best possible workout experience due to the extended options and greater variety.

Escape’s product designers developed a number of designs and prototypes for Best’s Bootcamp, making sure that the end result was perfect for the club and its customers. Escape has taken the Plyobox concept and created a bespoke box that delivers excellent versatility, with four configurations from a single product.

    Best Box

A wedge-shaped unit can be attached using Velcro to instantly turn the box into a weight bench. Both the box and bench configurations can be set up in a choice of two heights. This means that every user can choose a setting that works for them.

The two-products-in-one nature of the Best’s Box makes it easy to transition between exercise types. It also makes great sense to take this approach in a small space, doubling up what can be achieved with the available floor space.

Lee Drabble says, “The Best’s Box is a unique, market-leading design and it’s got a multi-dimensional purpose. Every time they use it, people come up with something new to do. People love the different heights, and the soft cushioning is a really big plus.”

Best’s devise their sessions around the Best’s Box with sessions giving users ‘a different balance of cardiovascular and strength training allowing you to choose the right one for your personal fitness goals’.

Clients at Best’s Bootcamp enjoy all the benefits of a boutique setting, without any compromises. Efficient storage solutions and the innovation of the Instructor Cam – linked up to big screens so everyone gets a great view of their instructor - make functional training sessions incredibly efficient. Everyone can access the equipment they need; everyone can see and hear the personal trainer’s instructions.

Following in the footsteps of Barry’s and 1Rebel puts the pressure on Best’s to be the best. But, with help from Escape Fitness, Best’s Bootcamp is already establishing itself as one of London’s premier luxe-fitness boutiques with an ever-growing user base and fans.
