Finding motivation to succeed, no matter what

Fighting the temptation to give up on your dreams because of what other people say is a real challenge for any entrepreneur. Motivation doesn’t come easy when people close to you are putting doubt in your mind. However, when you’re looking for success stories, they don’t come much greater than that of three-time Mr Olympia, Frank Zane.

“Nobody ever told me ‘You can do it. You have everything it takes!’ Nobody ever told me that,” explains Frank on the Escape Your Limits podcast. “They all said ‘Why you doing that? What are you, queer? Shaving your legs… You fairy.’

“On and on and on, that’s all I got; especially when I lived in Pennsylvania. I couldn’t wait to leave. Then I got more accepted and I found contacts with similar goals to me and I’d say ‘Go where you’re appreciated.’ That was motivation for me to get away from it – not having to be content with all that negativity all the time.

Whether you’re lacking in motivation or met with someone trying to push negativity on to anyone else, Frank Zane takes a simple approach in how he addresses such influences.

“If that’s what you think then you’re right. If you think it’s not possible, you’re right. You’ve already created your self-fulfilling prophecy. Don’t try to rub it off on me because I’m not there with that. What’s the truth? I don’t know. I don’t know what’s possible. I’m curious, though. I want to see where this leads. That’s always been my attitude.”

“There’s no such thing as being; there’s only becoming. How are we going to reinvent ourselves? Everything’s changing, always, by the second.”

Frank Zane has a fascinating outlook on time and spirituality, whether it’s about motivation, productivity or any other element of your approach to progress. Through poetry, below are his thoughts on the present, and how it doesn’t actually exist…

“The present is a microsecond fiction.
Now you see it; now you don’t.
I can’t even put it into diction.
The present’s just not here anymore.
The present won’t stay, while time slips away.

“There’s no such thing as the present. Show me the present – there it is, it’s gone!”
